When Doug Bolling sues for custody of his grandchildren, he sincerely believes he's rescuing them from a life of religious fanaticism, but it is also the latest battle in his long war with God. Mark Bolling finally found the acclaim and respect he so desperately craved as a missionary in Kenya, but it meant abandoning a promise he had made to his dying mother years earlier. Now, this father and son, locked in the legal battle of a lifetime, are forced to face their own fears and failures. As each man is stripped of what he holds most dear, Doug and Mark discover victory will require nothing less than complete surrender.

Wow! I just finished "Refined" yesterday, and feel like I have been on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Paula Wiseman does an excellent job in taking the Bolling family from near total destruction in "Razed", to a wonderful second chance to be the people and the family that God wanted them to be in this second book of the Foundation series.Seven years have passed. Mark's young boys are now teenagers, and his daughter a seven year old. The family is living in Kenya as missionaries, which is causing Mark's non-Christian father even more heartbreak. Not only can he and Mark not see eye to eye on anything, but what is the point of trying when his grandchildren, the only bright spot in his life, are a world away from him? Doug is convinced that Mark has purposely gone to a third world country to be as far from his father as he can possibly get, and although Mark tries to deny this and insists that the mission field is his calling, inside he knows that his father's accusation is at least partly true. Since he wasn't able to guilt his father into becoming a Christian, Mark feels he has failed his mother's dying wish and throws himself into his mission work. He has great success, but he is still torn, knowing that he is deliberately avoiding dealing with his own father's unbelief.
Meanwhile, Doug has a successful business, a beautiful house and a remarkable girlfriend, but he is plagued by a deep rooted belief that he will lose even these, just as he lost his parents, his wife, and his relationship with his son and grandchildren. While he treats his girlfriend, Cass, like a jewel, he cannot bring himself to make a permanent commitment to her.
In a desperate attempt to rescue his grandchildren from what he believes is a dangerous and abnormal life in Kenya, Doug sues his son and daughter-in-law for permanent custody of the children. The family is forced to return to the states, and each character goes through gut-wrenching emotions that shake everything that they have ever put their faith in. God deals with their self-righteous pride and anger, showing each of the characters the true meaning of grace, mercy and love. The people who emerge from this time of testing have truly been refined in the fire of God's Perfect Will..I am now waiting impatiently for the third book in this series, "Resolute", where Doug and his family will face a new and frightening test to their growing faith.

Refined Book Two Foundations Series edition by Paula Wiseman Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Another homerun by Paula Wiseman. An achingly realistic story of relationships today and how God's Grace is still at work.
I started reading this series after receiving the first one free. After I finished it I immediately bought book two. I loved the characters and related to them from the start. I am totally hooked and about to buy the third book. I'll be reading much more of this author and checking out their other series and titles. Great christian fiction!
After reading Razed, Book 1 of the series, I immediately ordered Refined. I read the book in two days and cannot wait for Resolute, Book 3, to be published. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. I love this author and just ordered her other series. The kindle editions are reasonably priced which is a plus.
Ms. Wiseman has caught my attention again. As a fan of Francine Rivers, recommended this author. She is my new favorite. I read the Covenant series first and was sold. She has a way of getting into your heart, opening up the dark recesses and clearing the cobwebs. This series is based on a male character with whom you cannot fail to find common ground. A must read for anyone who demands a moving, well written, introspective book.
I shed tears as I read this book. It was 100 this morning and I'm crying and praising the Lord. Thank you for pointing my eyes to Christ as you presented the true gospel and the lovliness of the Savior. The struggles of coming to know Him were beautifully written and His power and searching for His own woven into the story in the lives of the characters were gripping. Thank you Paula. Love to you and Merry Christmas.
A book of life! An often all to real story of conflict that arises between family when Chritianity is embraced by one or more members. The unsaved often feel threatened by the new and misunderstood values of those in Christ including their sometimes 'superior' attitude as they begin to learn to walk with Christ. Light cannot mix with darkness, and as Christ's love, peace, and other fruit of the Spirit start becoming evident in the life of the new believer the distance between the worlds way and Gods way increases the difference.
I read the first book and this sequel was excellent and worth waiting for!
While reading this book I was shocked, sad, angry and yelling (mostly at Doug) then smiling at the end. Wonderful execution of the story, the characters as always, were strong and believable. I love seeing the reality of people in these stories--too many Christian fiction novels read like Harlequin romances and they have their audience but I much prefer real life situations. We can all learn more (no matter how long we have been saved) and how to apply that knowledge to our lives.
The sneak peak of the next sequel sounds just as good. I cannot wait!
